What your child does each week.
A lesson with their own teacher
Every week, your child has a 30, 45 or 60-minute individual lesson. They work on technique, new pieces and musical expression, and learn how to practise at home.
Music perception studies in small groups
Students learn to read, write and understand music (music theory). In pop, rock and jazz, these studies are called AMP, where music theory and band playing are combined in one weekly lesson.
Playing together
Students make music together in orchestras, bands, choirs and ensembles from the beginning. They also perform regularly in relaxed concerts such as Sali Soi and Aula Soi, where performing skills are developed step by step.
Progress is followed using a shared Skills Chart, so the student, parents, teacher and Avonia staff can see what has been learned and what the student is currently working on.
Questions families often ask.
Do we need an audition?
No. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
When can we apply?
Applications for studies starting in the spring are open from 4 November to 5 December, and for studies starting in the autumn from 5 May to 22 May. Applications open at 9:00. Some groups may also have places available right now. See available places
What does it cost?
Fees are charged per term, and there are two terms in the school year. Basic studies with a 30-minute weekly individual lesson cost 310 € per term. The fee includes individual lessons, music perception studies and ensemble playing. New students pay a 15 € registration fee, and siblings studying at Avonia at the same time receive a 30 € sibling discount. Children attending music playschool at daycare may be eligible for a tuition-free place if their family is exempt from Espoo daycare fees. Applications must be submitted by 31 August. All fees
Can my child study in English?
Yes. Your child can study with us in English, even if they don’t speak Finnish yet. You can contact our office in English, and we’ll help you get started.
Can we try an instrument first?
Yes. At our student concerts you can hear the instruments and meet the teachers, and in our instrument carousel children can try different instruments.
Do we need our own instrument?
Some instruments are available to rent from us for 50–100 € per term, but not all instruments taught at Avonia are available for rental. Ask our office which instruments are currently available. Your teacher can also help you choose an instrument of the right size and quality.
How do we end the studies?
Studies continue automatically from the autumn term to the spring term. If you do not wish to continue in the spring, please let us know at info@avonia.fi. Please note that if studies are discontinued during a term, the full term fee is still payable.

A Finnish music institute offers much more than individual lessons. Your child has a weekly lesson with their own teacher, learns to read and understand music in small groups, and has opportunities to make music with others in orchestras, bands and choirs. All of these studies are included in one tuition fee per term.
Long-term studies
Studies follow the national core curriculum set by the Finnish National Agency for Education. Basic studies usually take six to seven years, followed by another three to four years of advanced studies. Your child’s own teacher supports and guides their overall progress and is your primary point of contact.
No entrance exam
Places are offered in the order applications are received. We don’t believe that a single entrance test can tell who will benefit most from music studies. What matters most is curiosity, motivation and the desire to learn.
