The accordion is a whole orchestra in your lap: the right hand plays the melody, the left plays the bass and chords, and the bellows give the sound its breath. The bellows make the accordion very expressive: you can shape a phrase with breath, just like a singer. The repertoire is wide: a young player's pieces may include children's songs, but classical music has also been written for the accordion, and it is at home in tango, folk music and jazz. Children can start at around the age of 5. Accordions come in different sizes for children, and the teacher helps choose the right one. The accordion is a solo instrument you can play on your own, but it also works well in ensembles.
