The traverso, or baroque flute, is a wooden transverse flute and the predecessor of the modern flute. It has only one key and open finger holes, so notes are produced through fingering and breath control. It demands a careful ear, but in return it offers tone colours the modern flute cannot produce.
Its sound is soft and expressive, and it is especially well suited to early music: Baroque solo sonatas, trio sonatas and orchestral music are at the heart of the traverso repertoire.
The traverso is light to hold and play. It's a natural choice for a flautist who wants to explore historical performance practice. It is best to buy the instrument with the teacher's help.
