The flute is a wind instrument with a bright sound. The sound is made by blowing a stream of air across the edge of the embouchure hole, rather than into it.
The flute is played in many styles, from classical music to pop, rock and jazz. It goes well with the piano, guitar and accordion. Avonia also has a flute group.
Children can start as early as 5 or 6, although the most common starting age is 7 to 9. Young players can use lighter, shorter flutes with a curved head joint that brings the instrument closer to the player. It's best to choose the first instrument together with the teacher.
