The kantele is Finland's national instrument.
Although the kantele is often thought of as a folk instrument, a great deal of concert music is composed for it today, and it also works in pop, rock and jazz and in improvisation. The concert kantele has a lever mechanism that lets you change key in the middle of a piece.
Children can start on the large kantele at around the age of 6, and the small kantele is suitable even for children under school age. The kantele is a relatively quiet instrument, which makes practising at home easy. It suits both solo and ensemble playing.
