In music perception classes, students practise understanding music they hear, play and read. At the heart of the learning is joyful music-making together. The classes develop, among other things, note-reading skills, creativity and an understanding of different musical styles.

Music Perception Studies

Teacher: Casimir Kytökorpi

Core topics in music perception studies:

1. Music fundamentals

Mastering pulse and different rhythms, note-reading skills, an understanding of chords and keys, and an introduction to music technology. Key working methods include listening, reproducing and notating what is heard, reading and writing music, playing, rhythm exercises and singing together.

2. Creative musicianship

Applying the knowledge and skills learned in small composition and improvisation exercises. These are done using both instruments and computers, individually and in small groups.

3. History and styles

Exploring the history of music and different musical styles. Students learn to recognise phenomena heard in music and practise putting into words the thoughts and feelings that music evokes, in group discussions.

Groups

Basic studies music perception groups are divided by student age as follows:

  • Basic level A: ages 9–11.
  • Basic level B: ages 12–14
  • Basic level C: ages 15 and older. Music perception studies for adult students are agreed separately.

Students who have received the basic level final certificate are offered advanced music perception studies. In these classes students deepen their existing skills and explore new topics according to their interests and orientation.

Students aiming for studies in the field of music are offered the opportunity to take part in entrance exam preparation. This group is intended mainly for those applying to upper secondary or higher education (conservatories, music upper secondary schools, universities of applied sciences and universities). The preparation reviews and practises the knowledge and skills required in entrance exams, according to each student’s needs.

Studying Composition

Composition studies introduce the students to basic concepts (e.g., rhythm, melody, harmony, texture) and approaches to composing. Students learn the fundamentals of notation as well as how to use the MuseScore software for their own compositions. During the studies, students compose their own music, which is then performed in concert settings.

Groups

  • Composition 1:  Ages 10 to 14

  • Composition 2: Ages 15 and older
