Pop/Jazz/Rock Music

The goals of studying pop/jazz/rock music are to develop technique, explore different genres, and to learn to utilise stylistically appropriate performance practices. There is a particular emphasis on playing in groups. An integral part of pop/jazz/rock music studies at Avonia is the AMP (Afro-American Music Principles) method, which aims to bridge the gap between playing an instrument and lessons in music fundamentals.

At Avonia, you can study the electric guitar, electric bass, vocals, keyboards, drums, and music fundamentals at the institute’s Olari location.

In teaching the fundamentals of pop/jazz/rock music, Avonia Music Institute uses the

Afro-American Music Principles (AMP) method, integrating theory, ear training, and transcription with playing in groups. Lessons combine pop/jazz/rock music fundamentals, ear training, transcription, and playing together as a band all into one subject. Weekly lessons consist of a theory section and a practical section.

The material used in AMP covers the curriculum of basic education in music. In the practical section, the students play together as a band, working on songs that incorporate the concepts introduced in the lessons. The goals and core content of the practical section include understanding one’s role in the group’s sound.

Even instrument studies in pop/jazz/rock music focus on playing in a band, emphasising each instrument’s role as part of a larger soundscape – the band. Performances are a key part of the study programme.

Music Technology

Basic studies in music technology provide the students with an understanding of the operating principles of the equipment in use, and a grasp of the vocabulary associated with the concepts, devices, work methods, and questions in the field of music technology. The studies support the students’ development in their own instruments, enabling them to make their own music, and to work in today’s music scene.

Study Modules:

  • The Basics of Music Technology

  • The Basics of Studio Work

  • The Basics of Sound Systems

After completing these basic modules, the students will be able to

  • Write music using MIDI-based notation software

  • Record and edit audio from different instruments

  • Mix and produce audio files in different formats

  • Transfer and share audio files across different platforms

Music technology studies are mainly intended for advanced students. The lessons are included in the tuition fee.

Instruments

Ukulele

The ukulele is a plucked string instrument, developed in Hawaii. It resembles a small guitar in its structure. The recommended age to start playing the ukulele is around 7 to 8 years. Ukulele lessons include learning basic chords, simple strumming patterns, fingerpicking, and reading music. At Avonia, you can study the ukulele in either private lessons or in a group setting. Learning to play the ukulele helps develop motor skills, gives students a grounding in the fundamentals of music, and provides a solid foundation for music as a hobby.

Steel-String Acoustic Guitar

The steel-string acoustic guitar is a central instrument in pop/rock music, and it is well suited for both solo and accompaniment playing. You can pluck the strings with either a pick or with your fingers. The recommended age to start playing is from 7 to 8 years. The steel-string acoustic guitar is different from the classical guitar in its construction, sound, and strings.

Piano/keyboard

In piano/keyboard lessons, the students explore different pop/jazz/rock styles and learn to play both the piano and electronic keyboard instruments, such as synthesizers. Keyboard players also participate in band and music fundamentals lessons (AMP), where ensemble playing is a key part of learning. You can start to play the piano already at age 4, but the right age to begin depends on the individual child.

Drums

You can start playing the drums at 6 to 7 years of age, and they are particularly well suited for those interested in rhythm and in motor coordination. Lessons focus on playing techniques and key accompaniment comps. Ensemble playing is important for drummers, since drums are first and foremost part of a band.

Suositeltu aloitusikä on 7–8 vuotta.
