Learning should be accompanied by positive experiences, and it should be done with the support of parents or guardians. Understanding the learning process and receiving constructive feedback during it make it as easy as possible for students to both enjoy playing an instrument and to move towards their goals. Regular practice is a requirement for progress.
All students at Avonia are provided with a digital portfolio, housed on an online storage platform. This portfolio includes the student’s skill matrix, videos and recordings, as well as other documents related to their studies. The portfolio is shared with the student, their parent or guardian, their teacher, as well as the institute’s administration.
The skill matrix is a tool for tracking the learning process. Instrument-specific skill matrices clearly outline the elements of the basic and advanced levels of music studies.
The skill matrix is divided into the following sections:
Learning to Study and Practice
Listening and Music Fundamentals
Composition and Improvisation
Performance and Expression
The Avonia Music Institute provides basic education in music according to the extended syllabus of the national core curriculum. The curriculum adheres to the Finnish National Ministry of Education and Culture’s guidelines for basic education in the arts (2017). Instrument-specific skill matrices and the digital portfolio are key methods in planning each student’s studies.
